Meet the Holy Spirit

(PowerPoint Slides from this Sermon)

THE POINT: Understanding the Person and Nature of the Holy Spirit is a necessity for the disciple of Jesus.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE HOLY GHOST

  • The Spirit is harder to conceptualize than the Father or the Son.
  • The Spirit is invisible and does everything in a supernatural way.
  • While people often fear the Spirit will bring chaos and fear, His Nature is one of order, rest and peace.
  • This all means we need to learn about Him MORE, not LESS.

THROUGHOUT THE BIBLE

  • “Holy Spirit” is used 194 times in the Bible.
  • “Spirit of God” is used 75 times.
  • “By the Spirit is used 81 times.
  • Numerous other references to “The Spirit”

Genesis 1:1-2 (NIV)
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

SPIRIT =  Ruwach (roo'-akh); wind; breath, exhalation; life, anger, unsubstantiality; spirit,

HOVERED = Rachaph (raw-khaf'); a primitive root; to brood; to fertilize

Like air/breath, the Holy Spirit is all around us but brings life when it’s moving in and out of us.

BY THE SPIRIT

Isaiah 63:14 (NIV)
like cattle that go down to the plain, they were given rest by the Spirit of the LORD. This is how you guided your people to make for yourself a glorious name.

Matthew 4:1 (NIV)
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

Matthew 12:28 (NIV)
But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Matthew 22:43 (NIV)
He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'?

Romans 8:6 (NIV)
The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;

1 Corinthians 2:13 (NIV)
This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

Galatians 5:16 (NIV)
So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

Philippians 3:3 (NIV)
For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh--

1 Peter 3:18 (NIV)
For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit…

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND YOU

This series is not just theological; it is personal.

The Holy Spirit is inside you and empowers you for victory in your life and to take your place in the Body of Christ.

WHAT THEN SHALL WE DO?

  • Read through the Bible (concordance or software is helpful) and look at all the references to the Holy Spirit.
  • GROWTH POINTS: Which of the things that the Holy Spirit does do you need Him to help you with?
