Gifts of the Holy Spirit
THE POINT: The Bible describes several “Gifts of the Holy Spirit” which are given to us for the benefit of everyone.
Ephesians 4:11-16 (NIV)
It was he who gave
- Some to be APOSTLES,
- Some to be PROPHETS,
- Some to be EVANGELISTS,
- Some to be PASTORS,
- And TEACHERS
…to prepare God's people for works of service.
1 Corinthians 12:7-10 (NIV)
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
- To one there is given through the Spirit the message of WISDOM,
- To another the message of KNOWLEDGE by means of the same Spirit,
- To another FAITH by the same Spirit,
- To another gifts of HEALING by that one Spirit,
- To another MIRACULOUS POWERS,
- To another PROPHECY,
- To another DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN SPIRITS,
- To another speaking in different kinds of TONGUES,
- To still another the INTERPRETATION of tongues.
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (NKJV)
- Speak with the TONGUES of men and of angels
- Have the gift of PROPHECY
- UNDERSTAND all mysteries and all knowledge
- Have all FAITH,
- GIVE all my goods to feed the poor,
- Give my body to be burned (MARTYRDOM)

Romans 12:4-8 (NIV)
- If a man's gift is PROPHESYING, let him use it in proportion to his faith.
- If it is SERVING, let him serve;
- if it is TEACHING, let him teach;
- if it is ENCOURAGING, let him encourage;
- if it is CONTRIBUTING to the needs of others, let him give generously;
- if it is LEADERSHIP, let him govern diligently;
- if it is SHOWING MERCY, let him do it cheerfully.
1 Peter 4:10-11 (NIV)
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.
- If anyone SPEAKS, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God.
- If anyone SERVES, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.
SO IS THIS A GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?
Exodus 31:2-5 (NIV)
"See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts-- to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- What’s the difference between a natural talent and a spiritual gift?
- Why is it important to know the difference?
- Are there spiritual gifts that aren’t listed in the Bible? If so, how do you know they’re a spiritual gift and just you?
- Or, how can you tell when the Holy Spirit is supernaturally empowering you?
